Beneficence - Contents Under Pressure EP 1991 (2017)

Originally recorded in 1991, but finally released in 1994, the "Suckas Brevity/Hostile Lifestyle" 12" by New Jersey MC & producer Beneficence is what you would probably refer to as an "obscure record".

Big Tabb - Who's Wreckin' Da Mic lp (2017)

Oh and how is the record? One of the DOPEST on Herring. Very much reminiscent of a "classic 1994 album" - production comes  from undercover Philly producer MG aka Mentally Gifted and  the beats are on a Beatnuts/Extra P/Groove Merchants/Pete  Rock tip - ha - sounds good right? IT IS!!!!

Exclusively For You!  and Readers of y Blog ! !  !
Kerwin Young worked in Public Enemy's Long Island studio at 510 South Franklin Avenue in Hempstead from 1988. He did production on all of Professor Griff's solo albums and his magic wand [pause] has touched many a Bomb Squad production. In 1993 he produced a demo by a cat called Dr Seus which made it into the Source Unsigned Hype section and he also produced half of Mobb Deep's debut album "Juvenile Hell".

Infinite Description - Elusive Illerstrators 93-94 EP (2015)

From the oven, The heat shit !
Infinite Description consisted of Lord Cyrus, Ill Natured Natural, and Bones from Baltimore,MD. They all attended Scott's Branch Elementary, Old Court Middle, and Milford Mill High School, so had known each other for most of their lives. The group honed their skills in the legendary Tic Toc studios owned by Jay Funk and eventually released a single "Swinging Tight B/W Nasty Ass and Hip-Hop Style" in 1994. They had enough material for a album and the plan was to self release. They put their money together and self-financed 300 copies on wax and 300 tapes through Disc Makers. The local feedback was great and the record led on to more Baltimore Hip Hop releases over the next few years, kick starting a healthy Baltimore scene.

MC Class See Level 1991-1993 EP (2014)

MC Class has pedigree. The godson of "Penetentiary" [1979] director Jamaa Fanaka and blacksploitation actress Carol Speed, Class was born and grew up in the Baychester area of the North Bronx. From his bedroom window in the 1970's he would experience the initial wave of Hip Hop culture first hand in the form of local DJ's setting up their turntables in the park over the way and blasting pre-Hip Hop flava to the local community, free of charge!! Back then Hip Hop was a free culture and Class would lament it's progression into a commercial product and it's bastardisation on route. His early exposure to the music came through Jerry Bloodrock's radio show on college radio, which he would tape and play in the schoolyard on his boombox. At that time everyone round the way rhymed and Class was no different. In fact all his communication to others was supplied in the form of rhyme - he was truly a product of his environment. But experiencing first hand the growing violence in the streets of the Bronx in the 70's and early 80's and abhorring it, he vowed to get out of NY. It was the Navy which came to his immediate rescue... He got out of the Navy in 1989 and not wanting to move back to New York he set himself up in Seattle, about as far away as he could get. There he formed the group Brothers Of The Same Mind. Off the back of many successful live shows they were written up in the Unsigned Hype section of The Source in 1990 which lead to more touring, then finding representation. Following another feature in The Source as well as many other Hip Hop mags of the day, they were signed to Conspiracy Records. They dropped one single on Conspiracy, but before an album could be picked up for a major deal the band split up. Following the demise of the group, Class was hit with a bout of depression. Realising his knowledge, commitment and passion for his art he went back to college to study sound engineering and film. A direct motivator for his newly chosen path was the result of a show he performed at as a solo artist after the group split up. The sound quality was mad nasty at the venue and the main act came on stage, kicked the sound engineer off the boards and brought in its own dude. Class realised then the importance of sound control and focused for the next few years on obtaining a bachelors degree. Oh, the main act was Dj Quick! Class self financed his first solo 12", the now in-demand "Hope You're Listening" and gave all copies away as promos. Red Alert got one and used it on a mix tape and a few artists sampled the opening line of "Fishin'". He contued to work with artists in a production and video producing capacity through the 90s and to this day can be found writing and producing in the North West. When the Brothers split and Class was feelin like his life wasn't making sense, one of his boys, in reference to him using his skills to make something happen with his career, offered him some advice and it's this analogy that 20 years later lead to Class and Herring's collab for the 100th release on the label. He said "Yo Class, you need to go fishin'"...the rest is history....

Pazz The Jazz The 1992-1993 Demos EP (2014)

Download (solidfiles)

Rotterdam was, is and probably will be known in years to come as the Hip Hop capital of The Netherlands. In the early ‘80’s this city proved to have very fertile grounds which germinated the "Hip Hop seeds" blowing over from the USA to Europe. The diverse cultural background of the city’s inhabitants played a large role. Cultural key elements being the no-nonsense attitude of working class ‘Docks city’ kids and the many sons of immigrants from countries like Surinam and Cabo Verde who were searching for the right sub cultural movement to make their own. Rotterdam in 1981 spawned some of the first legendary B-Boys of Europe: the likes of Paulo Nunes, Carlos Rocha and Edzon Themen. Rap music followed close after with the first DJ’s and rappers popping up around 1983. DJ Save, DJ Alien, DJ DCS, Jazz DMX, Def Rhymz and other local pioneers laid the first bricks that would eventually become the fortress of Rotterdam Hip Hop Culture in the late ‘80’s. From 1987 on, Rotterdam’s Hip Hop movement was huge and dominated Holland’s entire party scene. Numerous groups arose and performed all over the country, the most notable being Supersonic Cru, D.C.O., Moonrunners, Dope Syndicate, Interface Sources, Time Drillers and Space Connection. Many of these groups were allied to the large and infamous Bad Boys Posse. The sad fact is, except for some noisy demo tapes, almost nothing got "properly" recorded in those days. Although the underground Hip Hop scene was booming, the record companies were totally ignorant towards this ‘new’ kind of music. It proved to be nearly impossible to get the tracks out on vinyl and so a lot of music got lost. It took until 1995 (when rapping in the native language exploded on the scene) before Dutch rap artists got signed on a larger scale. One of the groups from Rotterdam’s golden era of rap was Pazz The Jazz. This large crew consisting out of rappers Earnasty, Dimension, B-Rough and DJ/producer Chris H., had one of the best stage shows of the early ‘90’s. They recorded some great demos in 1993 but like other groups they couldn’t capitalize on their underground success due to unwilling record labels. Luckily, in contrast to many of their peers, they preserved the demo recordings making it possible for Chopped Herring to do what others have failed to do two decades eariler ...

V.A. Nodyaheadtodis Volume 1.5 (2014)

Downlaod (solidfiles)

V.A. - Nodyaheadtodis Volume 1.5 "In the fall of 1995 I decided to reach out to several local rappers from my old neighborhood in Brooklyn NY to record an underground classic compilation. Most of the rappers had never recorded before, making it a creative challenge for me. As a result, myself and my cousin Larry Cooper formed an Indie label called Discreet Records. At the time we thought it was a great time for indie hip hop especially with the success of the Wu Tang Clan. So the idea to make Nodyaheadtodis Vol.1 was the vessel to launch the label as well as the careers of our artists. The album included Darcsyde, Son of Blunts, Jac Nickelsun, Dre Black & Ms Stress, and an amazing reggae hip hop collabo featuring Mikey Jarrett, Bobo General, Sleepy Wonder, Screechy Dan and two late great dancehall legends Nicodemus & Sluggy Ranks to name a few. We were fortunate as well to have a great intro with the track "Who's calling" in which several top DJ's and radio personalities including Kool Dj Red Alert and Ralph Mc Daniels called in for an update on the record. It was released in May of 1996. It wasn't exactly a radio smash but it did well in the streets and underground circuit. I'm still very proud of it considering the fact that we recorded it in my apartment at the time. Although many of the artists are no longer in the music business, I must say that had a major distributor picked us up, this conversation might be quite different today. Nodyaheadtodis Vol 1. is still classic to me and hopefully a whole new underground hip hop audience." Brent "Faroah" Toussaint, producer of the Nodyaheadtodis EP's.
